This product is the BMS Workshop development board that is designed for the HT45F85x4/HT45F85x6 series MCU adaptor boards. The development board can help you monitor the status of Li-ion batteries and needs to be used with the HT45F86xx series MCU adaptor board, a voltage calibration board, and the development platform, BMS Workshop.

DESCRIPTION

BMS (Battery Management System) is a system to detect the status of Li-ion batteries and control the charge and discharge promptly to keep the operation safe and extend battery life. Without BMS, Li-ion batteries may damage or explode due to improper use.

In the workshop, you can configure multiple parameters and then generate program codes and schematics. Codes can be programmed into the MCU adaptor via e-Link and HOPE3000 for e-Link software.

BMS Workshop includes seven protection functions: charge protection, discharge protection, charger voltage protection, charge current protection, short-circuit protection, and temperature protection.

Getting Started

  1. Insert the MCU adaptor board into the development board.
It is important to make sure the direction of the MCU adaptor board is correct when inserting it into the development board:
    (1) The MCU part number should be on the front side.
    (2) The triangle should be on the lower right of the adaptor board.
  2. The MCU adaptor board needs to learn the standard voltage before programming. Therefore, you need to connect the development board to the calibration board, long press the calibration button, and then turn on the power.
  3. The MCU starts learning the voltage of 4.2V (accuracy: ±1%). The four LEDs light up for about 5 seconds when the learning is completed.
  4. Because the Li-ion battery is critical to safety, absolute precision is required, and the voltage accuracy of each cell is required to be ±1%. That's the reason why the MCU needs to learn the standard voltage.
  5. Download the BMS workshop software on Holtek’s website.
  6. Create a project after opening the software.
  7. You can configure parameters in the workshop, and generate the program file (.mtp) and schematic.
  8. Connect the development board to an e-Link and use HOPE3000 for e-Link to program the code.
  9. It's important to remove any other device except e-Link (such as power) when programming.
  10. The programmed MCU adaptor board can provide BMS protection functions. You can connect the development board to Li-ion batteries and start your project.
Why do I need the Li-ion battery protection functions?

If the Li-ion battery is used improperly, the battery will be damaged, and there may be an explosion accident.
The protection functions provided by the BMS workshop are used to prevent them.

  1. Charge / discharge protection
Over-discharge: lead Li-ion batteries to damage and degrade.
Overcharged: Li-ion battery can cause an explosion. It is very dangerous!
  2. Charger voltage protection
This protection function is used to make sure the charger voltage is within a reasonable range.
Charger's voltage is too low: batteries' power flows back to the charger.
Charger's voltage is too high: large voltage difference damages the charger and batteries.
  3. Charge / discharge current protection
Charge current is too small: it needs to take a longer time for charging.
Charge current is too large: the batteries' temperature raises sharply and causes damaged.
Large discharge current: lead batteries to overheat and degrade.
  4. Short-circuit protection
The protection system can interrupt voltage output immediately if a short circuit occurs during operation.
  5. Temperature protection
If Li-ion batteries keep working at high temperatures, battery circling is reduced.
